LOCODUINO heeft als doel om alles te laten zien wat met een Arduino gedaan kan worden in de modelspoorbaan. LOCODUINO is in de eerste plaats een community-site waar je artikelen vindt die gewijd zijn aan het gebruik van de Arduino in de modelspoorbaan, maar ook educatieve artikelen over de noodzakelijke basiskennis: eenvoudige elektronica en programmeren.

Arduino is een opensource-computerplatform bedoeld om het werken met microcontrollers zoals de Atmel AVR eenvoudig te maken.

Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele is een museumspoorwegbedrijf, opgericht in 1971. Een van de oudste museumlijnen van Nederland, bijna volledig gerund door 200 vrijwilligers. De SGB bezit de spoorlijn Goes-Oudelande, welke bijna volledig (tot Baarland) in exploitatie is voor de museumtreinen.

I have been experimenting with using the Arduino to receive DCC commands in order to use small dedicated DCC decoders to operate animations and other non-locomotive things on my modular layout.

In this project, an Arduino based Traffic Light Controller system is designed. It is a simple implementation of traffic lights system but can be extended to a real time system with programmable timings, pedestrian lighting etc.

When the train trips the first IR sensor, it starts a timer, when it trips the second, it tops the timer, calculates and displays the scale speed, and resets after a delay.

The train gets to an end of track (and IR sensor detects it), the train goes back, and so on.

With a digital model railway, train detection (block signaling) is an important function. Most often current sensing is used. It is quite reliable and you don't have any (possibly ugly and always non-prototypical) sensors in view. The drawback is that it probably also is the most expensive method.

Now that we can control 1 train with arduino, it's time to add a second one. We made a track where the two trains share a part of the track, but also each have an individual part of the track. In this case we can let a train wait on his own track, while the other train uses the shared part of the track. How do we know when the other train can start? We will be using photosensors for this.

Most plans have been designed using HO/OO gauge set-track with some sections of flexible track. Many of the designs have first radius curves that will not be suitable for all types of rolling stock. However, the ideas here can be developed further using other types of track, provided that you have the space to accommodate larger radius curves and pointwork. ​​​​
